Our Chronicle
The Bangalore City Improvement Trust Board, in 1944 planned the beautiful Jayanagar Layout in stages. Nine blocks of areas were developed forming the biggest residential layout in Asia.
There were only a few catholic families living in huts at the southern side of the Lalbagh Tank. Till January 1949, St.Joseph's Parish, Chamrajpet looked after the spiritual needs of the faithful. Later in 1956, the then newly established Parish of St.Theresa's Church, Cubbonpet took the duty. The CITD authorities took over the land around Lalbagh and displaced those families to sites provided at the 'Hunting' colony, Jayanagar East. This new colony is now Tilak Nagar.
Rev. Fr.Castelino was the then Parish Priest of St.Theresa. He tirelessly put his effort to fetch a grant of two small sites from CITB to start St.Antony's Primary School in 1957. Most Rev .Dr. Thomas Pottiacamury, the then Archbishop of Bangalore blessed it in 1957. The people of hunting colony had to go all the way to St. Theresa's Church for mass as no masses were offered in their place of stay. After 1960's, the Rev. Fr. Castelino, allowed a mass once a month at St.Anthony's School for the people of Tilak Nagar.
St. Anthony's Friary's Fr.David was a stalwart to start this mass. The monthly mass became weekly and finally a daily people participating mass. The present church site was allotted in 1966. Rev. Fr. Castelino and Fr. David invested their effort and began the construction work of the new church. In 1967, Fr.Castelino sadly demised. The church was completed in 1969. The church is dedicated to the mystery of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to be entitled 'Christa Prabhalaya'. It was blessed on 2nd March 1969 by Archbishop Most Rev. Dr.Lourduswamy.
Today our Christa Prabhalaya is a big parish with a known membership of 1200 families' with over 6500 members. With the growth of Bangalore into a megacity the membership is increasing fast.
The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 14th March 1993 by Honorable Minister for Labour, Government of Karnataka - Mr.Blasius D'Souza and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Bangalore-Monsignor Jabamlai. It is very strange for Fr.David's intention 25 years ago choosing of a low level site that has come true. Indeed, God's ways are truly wonderful.
On April 1994, the church completed its 25 years of dedicated service. On 25 August 1996, the new church construction was completed, blessed and inaugurated by Bangalore's Archbishop Alphonsus Mathias.
